Hello all....
A free viewing link for my Episode 510 of "The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims" is now up and available for your viewing between November 16 - 22, 2009.
Instructions for access follow between the horizontal lines below. .
The Episode titled "Quilts Through Two Artists' Eyes" presents different perspectives from two quilt artists - myself and Tammy Finkler. Tammy, a traditional quilter and long arm quilting expert, guides you step by step through the process of designing intricate wholecloth quilting designs. Then I run through 'DRAWING FOR PEOPLE THAT DON'T DRAW...AND PAINTING FOR PEOPLE THAT DON'T PAINT." I think you might find it fun... at least most of it was fun for me! We had NO rehearsal so I responded to questions as they came. I wasn't thrilled with all my answers... but it went well overall, and you might find it fun to see me work so fast... like cooking on a morning TV news hour.

It's the Oscars of Quilting and everyone is invited whether you have entered or not. It's beautiful.

Winter Hunt will place at Houston
Nice call from Houston International Today. I've been notified my Mountain Lion hunting in Snow will place for a cash award in Octobers Festival. Quilts Inc.... informs cash prize winners but doesn't tell them about what prize... until the awards ceremony. Bottom line, they are hopeing you come so they give you some notice. Needless to say, I am THRILLED! Ofcourse I will be there. I'm arriving early enough to go to market before my teaching engagement starts. Last year, of the 4 awards in my category, three were international entries from outside the U.S. I placed 3rd last year and was thrilled beyond belief to have been the only American in the bunch.
I strongly suspect there is at least one other American in the mix this year. I can't wait to see Hollis Chatelains entry. It should be large powerful imagery, and beautifully executed.

Newest Article in Print in Machine Quilting Unlimited
I love this magazine designed specifically for those quilting those quilt tops. Machine Quilting Unlimited is a subscription only magazine you might find interesting : http://www.mqumag.com
The magazine has just published my article on making thread color choices...Thread: The Linear Paint! This topic could easily be a book, tho this article focuses mostly on how complementary (to fabric) thread colors in differing values might be used for impact. Shown here is a snippet of the article. Contact mqumag.com for past issues and subscriptions.

Headed for Paducah
Well I'll be danged!! Just got word that my African Bull piece "Endangered" is going to Paducah for the late April show. Heck... I haven't even been there! Anyway.. pretty exciting! This was my first entry to Paducah and I was somewhat surprised to learn their wall entries have a fairly large minimum size.... I think 41" wide which Endangered just makes.
We all must get there someday.... not to 41" wide.... to Paducah! :-) Patt

Los Angeles Area "Avenue 50 Studio" EXHIBIT and Sale - SAQA
Sometimes I NEED to do something abstract just to focus on fun quilting techniques/ patterns. Strings 1 is one such quilt. (There is also a strings 2 and 3). I dropped Strings 1 in the mail today for an upcoming Surface Art Associates juried exhibit/sale at Avenue 50 Studio Gallery, 131 No. Avenue 50, Highland Park, Ca. 90042. This should be interesting in that there were some 134 juried entries including international entries from Spain, Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Canada, among others. The exhibit and sale will run from March 14, 2009 to April 5, 2009. I think I need to go there myself!

New CD Patterns and Followalong Guides
For some time, students have been asking I make patterns that I bring to class available in commercial form. Before I did that, I felt (I'm a teacher at heart) that I needed to create a step by step, color by color photo follow along guide.... which ofcourse meant repainting and photographing/documenting as I went. That's now done for four patterns and are now available from JukeboxQuilts.com (though they aren't on the website as of yesterday). You can email customerservice@jukeboxquilts.com though and they can fill your order til the web site is made current. These are economic! $10 retail (Jukebox may offer some specials... their call) They include printable pdf drawings in 2 sizes...8 1/2 x 11 so you can enlarge to any size you want and one preformatted to print at 18"x24"..plus the step by step photo/text guide. Click on Products/Resources link to move to Jukebox website.
CD drawings and guides include:
Tiger Eyes
King (the lion)
Santa's Secret
Southern Grace (Magnolia)
The back cover of each disk identifies the specific ink colors/markers I used tho I love it when people change to their "own ideas." Jukeboxquilts.com distributes both these CDs and the used products so I'm certain they would pull and ship a personal kit.

Taping the QUILTSHOW.COM in Mar 2009
How cool is this?? On Mar 12, I will take flight to Colorado Springs, drive to Ricky Timms studio in LaVeta Colorado for a Mar 13 segment tapeing of "Drawing and Painting for People Who Don't!" This should be tons of fun (yes I'm a bit nervous). Check out the quilt gallery at http://www.thequiltshow.com ..... Only members view the resulting show ('will post here when I know the date it will be released) but everyone can see a sample show for free, and see quilts posted by members. Check it out. News update on this later. :-) ...... Patt Blair

SPRING 2009 Thread- The Linear Paint Article in MQUmagazine
The Spring Issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited (due out end of Mar 2009) contains my article titled "Thread- The Linear Paint"... touching on selecting thread colors atop your quilt. I think you might find the info and photos interesting!
If you machine quilt (be it long arm or domestic) Machine Quilting Unlimited is a pretty nice 4 times a year subscription magazine by Meander Publishing ( cool name).
There are NO quilt top patterns in this magazine... It's about the quilting of finished tops. Check it out at www.mqumag.com.
